Kokolopori Bonobo Peace Forest

Forest Conservation and Biodiversity through Bonobo Protection

The Kokolopori Bonobo Peace Forest is home to one of the largest known populations of bonobos and is located within the Kokolopori Bonobo Nature Reserve, a protected area of 4,785 km2 situated between the provinces of Tshuapa and Tshopo in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As one of the few places where bonobos are accustomed to human presence, conservation efforts and research are extremely important for ecosystem preservation.

However, caring for the bonobos’ habitat alone is not sufficient. This is because the Kokolopori people have suffered the consequences of a civil war that limited access to natural resources around their communities and forced the opening of new areas for subsistence farming based on slash-and-burn practices, along with hunting for survival – posing a threat to the ecosystem and wildlife.

Conservation and protection
of bonobo habitat

Fighting illegal deforestation and promoting sustainable agricultural production.

Preserving habitats for bonobos and other protected species such as the Congo peacock and dwarf crocodile.

Social and economic development of the involved local populations.

Sustainable long-term funding for project
actions.

The focus of this project is forest conservation through combating both illegal and legal deforestation, as a means to preserve endangered fauna and mitigate climate change by reducing carbon emissions. Simultaneously, it addresses the sustainable long-term development of local communities with actions that provide better living conditions and land use without causing environmental degradation.
